Trackmaster

The trackmaster (codenamed weasel) was our taxi to work for most of the year. We got to know our trackmaster drivers extremely well during our tour of duty. It was 5 miles from Upper Camp to the BMEWS work site and we were on a three rotating shift schedule so we spent a lot of time in these vehicles. The views of Northern Lights on night trips were stunning. During white-out conditions driving one of these vehicles was very challenging. The snow pack was many feet deep and navigation was by bamboo poles placed about 20 feet apart. Occasionally these would become buried or blown away. If this happened in really bad conditions one of the vehicle occupants would be sent out into the snow attached to a long rope to circle ahead of the vehicle and try to find the next intact pole. This is a picture of driver Doug Gosse outside the motor pool in one of the weasels.
