The TACAN Building

This not very clear picture is of the TACAN building or TACAN “Shack” as we called it locally.

TACAN was short for TACtical Air Navigation. It transmitted a rotating, shaped radiation pattern that could be used by aircraft to calculate their bearing from the facility. TACAN also received signals from the interrogating aircraft and retransmitted them back allowing the aircraft, by analyzing the time delay, to calculate its distance from the facility.

The equipment in the TACAN shack was maintained by us BMEWS  technicians and I spent an uncomfortable night there stuck in a storm one time.
